Let me start off with what Mass Effect is, this is a game that is for the XBOX 360 and is rated M for mature which means it is for those that are seventeen and and up. This is an epic game where you have the choice of three careers to choose from and can customize your main character to fit the look that you want for him.

  What this game is, as I have said is an open-ended game where you have the choice to alter the storyline or form relationships if you want. If you pursue that relationship far enough you will be able to enjoy each other within your bedroom. This is done through quick cut scenes an example is this one right here.

As you can see it is a scene between two women, one a human and the other an alien, you have the choice of having male/female interaction or female/female. It can be done with most NPCs, women or men. There is a lack of male/male interaction which some disagree with, but most may be glad it is not there.

  This scene and many others within the game that portray acts like these is the main point of this post. My next link will be from a man that seems to have never played the game but "talked with those that did".

  Now here he does have some points or point for that matter and that is on the subject of M rated games being marketed to those under the age limit. I use marketed in a loose sense as all games are advertised, be it through, TV, internet ads, magazine ads, especially in gaming magazine ads, you will see a lot of M rated games as you flip through the pages. These games have a right to be advertised, they are not hiding the fact that they are M rated games, the giant M label that is on the box which says who it is meant for is a label that was created by the ESRB a private organization that the game companies voluntarily go through to receive the ratings that the games get.

  The problem lies not in the advertising, or the ESRB and its labels, the problem lies within the underage kinds and the parents that are purchasing these games when they should not, it is not the fault of the ads that the kid decides to break a society law and go out and buy a game that he should not. Is it the fault of the game stores that sell the game to the kid so they can make a profit? Or is it the fault of the parents for not monitoring what their kids play and buy.

  The parents have no excuse to point fingers at the game industry or blame them for trying to bombard kids with "pornographic games", no the parents need to look within their household and at themselves. There are plenty of tools available to research a game before your kid buys it. I have read to many stories of how a parent was just "horrified" of the M rated game that they bought their child and demanded that something be done about this so it does not happen again..Something needs to be done?


Let me make you aware of what is available for parents to research games, that are on the market right now that they can search through before buying this for their kids.

www.ESRB.org  allows you to search for any game that is on the market and lists the rating of the game and why it has that rating.  This site should be enough as the website is listed on every game usually near the label on the back of the game case.

Even with the ratings, the ESRB website and the fact that every label on the game case even lists why it has that rating, parents, politicians just have to overreact about something. The point of this post is to point out that there are plenty of rules and regulations to keep mature rated games out of the hands of children and that games do not make one socially inadequate or a serial killer as some would suggest.
